The Bow Tie is Back: Here’s How You Can Make the Most of This Old New Trend

There is no doubt about it, the bow tie is back.

For years, bow ties have been associated with older gentlemen, nerds (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and formal attire. Now we are seeing them more often. They are being worn with sweater vests, suits and other looks ranging from casual to high end.

Bow ties may not be for every man, but they make a statement, and they bring a smile to most faces. If you want to jump on the bandwagon, here’s fashion some advice.

Why the Bow Tie?

First, let’s explore why the bow tie made a comeback. I owe this to a combination of reasons.

·        A Need for Nostalgia: We all like to escape to a simpler time. The bow tie has an old fashioned look that takes us back.

·        The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: Nerd culture is taking over. The bow tie is just one way it’s integrating into the world of fashion.

·        They’re So Darned Cute: I don’t know about you, but every time I see a bow tie, I just want to smile.

How to Wear a Bow Tie

There are basically two types of bow tie looks; casual and formal. Let’s take a look at both scenarios.

Formal: For formal, you’ll be adding a bow tie to a suit and dress shirt. If the occasion is super formal, you will want to wear a black tie and suit. If it’s more casual, you may be able to get away with color combinations.

If you go with a solid color bow tie, you will want it to match the color of your suit. You could also do a monochrome theme and choose one that matches your shirt which works well with any other kind of tie. But because bow ties are smaller, they may not show up on a shirt of the same color.

If your bow tie is print, feel free to go with colors that match the shirt, suit or both.

Casual: If you go the casual route, add fun elements to let everyone know you know what you’re doing. A dress shirt, cardigan or sweater vest, for example will make for a perfect base for a bow tie. Wear the outfit with jeans or dress pants and you’re good to go.

When it comes to color, you don’t have to be as careful about matching as you do when wearing a suit. Because it’s a fun look, you can wear a brown vest, a gray shirt, a pair of jeans and a bright pink bow tie and you’ll still rock the style.

What Kind of Bow Tie Should I Wear?

When it comes to bow ties, there are so many to choose from. Here are a few ideas.

Textured

Wearing a bow tie with a textured surface brings a little more fun. It can work well with formal, semi-formal and casual looks.

Prints

Prints make bow tie looks fun. Depending on how bold the print is, these bow ties can be worn with a suit or a more casual look. However, they are not recommended for very formal occasions.

Tying a Bow Tie

We won’t lie to you…tying a bow tie is not easy. However, there are plenty of online tutorials that can help.

Also, many bowties are clip-ons and, unlike regular clip-on ties, these do not look cheesy. It might be best to go that route.

Now that you know more about bow ties and how to wear them, will you be adding them to your wardrobe?
